I AM astounded at the number of motorists in Oxford driving at night with only one dipped headlight working.

My estimate is that one in 15 – that is approximately six per cent of cars – are breaking the law in this way.

A vehicle travelling with inadequate lights is a danger to the occupants and other motorists and would automatically fail an MoT test (Highway Code annexes 6).

On the question of car lights, it is also very noticeable that most drivers at night sit at traffic lights with their foot on the footbrake lighting the stop lights, rather than apply the handbrake.

When queuing behind them it is like Blackpool Illuminations until the lights change to green and the cars pull away.
