NEIGHBOURS in Abingdon have welcomed new street signs which make it easier for visitors and the emergency services to find where they live.

People living in Thames View, off Audlett Drive, have been campaigning for three years for clearer street signs.

Jacquelyn Humphreys led the campaign, supported by fellow residents Ian Leeds and Joe Nicholls.

Now new signs have been provided which clearly show where residents live.

Mother-of-two Mrs Humphreys, 67, of Thames View, said: “Barratt Homes built Thames View about five years ago but there were not any street signs showing the numbers of properties.

“I started campaigning for the signs and shortly after I started I got chest pains.

“An ambulance had to be called and the driver had difficulty finding my house.

“The new signs were put up shortly after Christmas. I’m very glad this has now been done.”

At the time of the incident in 2009, Barratt Homes said the street signs it provided when the homes were built met planning requirements.

IT consultant Ian Leeds, 47, who is currently unemployed, added that he was pleased there were now numbered street signs. He said: “Until now, it has been quite confusing for visitors, the postman, delivery drivers and emergency services.”

Barratt Homes spokesman Hannah Elwell said that the firm was no longer responsible for the estate and had not provided the new signs.

It is understood that managing agents for the homes in Thames View, a mixture of private homes and housing association properties, were responsible for providing the new signs.
