Sir – I think the prayers-before-council meetings hoo hah has become something of a tempest in a teapot. While on an aeroplane to my Christmas holiday destination, the pilot tactfully said “To those who celebrate it, a very happy Christmas”.

I’m not au fait with how council meetings are run, but surely a similar kind of respect would be efficacious. Before a prayer at the council meeting, perhaps someone could say, “for those who would like, a short prayer will now be said. Non believers please feel free to patiently sip your coffee.”

It doesn’t concern me that prayers are said before council meetings. It does however concern me that people in positions of authority, such as councillors, can’t find a solution.
