I had to go to the local post office to collect an item that couldn't be delivered as there was insufficient postage on it, the item was going to cost me £1.22 to retrieve.

The item was a Christmas card sent to me by a friend, as the edges of the card just were over the post office size. It was held until I paid £1.22.

For goodness sake, it’s Christmas! Season of goodwill to all men, unless you work for the post office!

There were at least 500 other cards waiting for payment before they were handed over to the owner.

It means many, many people won’t get cards that have been sent in good faith, thinking their Christmas wishes will be passed on via the postal system.

How many will not be collected as would just be too costly to retrieve their post?

Is this just another scheme to make money for the postal system?

Perhaps the card-makers should make it clear which cards will cost more to post, as they are just a tad too big, or there is a small thing or badge stuck on the front, again making it not the normal size and shape and so has to have an added charge?

What happens to the extra money that’s made this way?

Merry Christmas post office, or is it ‘Bah humbug’?
