Sir – Ruskin College has submitted a plan for development of 150 houses on its fields adjoining the bypass. A council meeting scheduled for December 19 will decide on this plan. The decision is critical for residents of Headington, and concerns the city as a whole.

It concerns the city in general, because the Ruskin fields belong to a Conservation Area — if such areas can be whittled away whenever profitable, the character of our city will be at risk.

The decision affects Headington because if allowed, the development (150 houses, up to four storeys or more) would increase the traffic through Osler Road, St Andrew’s Road and the Old High Street far beyond their capacity.

St Andrew’s Road is effectively a single lane in all the parking stretches, and sees several blockages a day already.
