Sir – While I agree that the Thornhill park-and-ride is much in need of an extension, I was not too impressed at councillor Mike Gotch’s casual £2.50-per-day suggestion.
He seems not to appreciate completely the financial difficulties the many low-paid workers in the city are currently having. This suggestion amounts to an extra tax of about £600 year!
It is all very well justifying the possible cost to the council and the sound investment but what about his electorate, may I ask?
I would suggest that we have already paid for this. Our eye-watering annual council tax has to be queried: what are we are getting for it? Could some funding be found, by real economies at the council top level, without generous pay-offs and by the councillors themselves?
Please remember there are very many members of the public spending a lot of time in voluntary work, without any financial reward or expenses. It’s time now, for a change, for councillors to do likewise and perhaps this might help getting the message through.
And finally: come on all you lower-paid workers, put your head above the parapet, write and protest to try and stop this city council’s ‘cane the motorist’ philosophy.
