Nuisance lorries parking overnight on a major road in an Oxford estate look set to get banned next year.

For years, residents have complained about dozens of vehicles parking in Grenoble Road, Blackbird Leys, while the drivers rest.

There were complaints about rubbish strewn on the ground and bushes and alleyways being used as toilets.

But now Leys and Lye county councillor Richard Stevens has asked Oxfordshire County Council to put in an application to ban the lorries.

He said: “This is an important issue for the area because of the effect it is having on properties. We recognise lorries have to park somewhere, but that shouldn’t unduly affect residents.”

The number of lorries in Grenoble Road was monitored in November and showed a regular spike in numbers after midnight.

Mr Stevens said: “The statistics showed there were up to seven lorries parked there each night in early November.

“All those lorries have generators, so it’s noise in the middle of the night for all those residents.”

A proposal has now been presented to the county council, asking it to impose a legal ban for the vehicles.

Mr Stevens hopes the money for the application will be from the council’s area stewardship fund, provided for highway-related projects.

He said: “We now have a lot of evidence about what’s been going on. The council is evaluating the proposal, looking at the practicalities of the ban.

“All these things take time and they cost money. But what’s important is that the ball is now rolling. And it will get done.”

Readers on oxfordmail.c- o.uk complained about the lorries last time the issue was raised in August.

Snoop said: “The lorries protrude out into the road forcing cars over the lines into oncoming traffic.

“More and more are turning up and their rubbish is just launched into the road. Either ban the lorries or at least turn parking into short stay only.”

Andrew: Oxford added: “A number of residents have already taken matters into their own hands closer to the stadium.

“All they did was to get their neighbours together and park their cars on Grenoble Road with two car lengths between each car from 6pm to 10pm – so insufficient space for a lorry.”

Oxfordshire County Council will consider the proposal, which would ban lorries at all times of the day, over the next few months.
