Christmas often prompts us to want to do something extra for charity, but volunteering at this busy time of year is not always possible. Mental health charity Restore offers an alternative. The Oxfordshire charity holds seasonal events which are fun and festive, as well as a way to support the local community at this time of year.

Unique gifts, decorations and cards on sale at the events are handmade by people with mental health problems who use Restore’s services. Christmas wreaths, tree decorations, chutneys and preserves, and wooden toys are just some of the goodies on offer. They are mostly made from recycled materials and produce from the charity’s allotments so are perfect for people looking for ethical presents for friends and relatives.

The atmosphere of the events harks back to a bygone era and feels magical and ‘Christmassy’. At Elder Stubbs, where Restore holds the annual summer festival, visitors huddle round fires cradling roasted chestnuts and mulled fruit punch. Fleet Meadow, Restore’s South Oxfordshire group, offers handmade gifts and decorations to Didcot residents.

In addition this year, the Garden Café’s event will offer children’s activities such as lantern-making and gingerbread-decorating.

By encouraging visitors, the events also aim to reduce the stigma and discrimination around mental illness. Chief executive Benedict Leigh said: “We aim to showcase the talents and skills of people with mental health problems, as these are often overlooked. Restore has been part of the community since we were founded in 1977. Many local people come to our summer events but not everyone knows that we are open to the public before Christmas.”

While it is possible to volunteer all year round at Restore, showing support at Christmas time is also valuable. It is a difficult time of year for many people with mental health problems and the support of the community makes a real difference. The Elder Stubbs Winter Warmer evening is on Friday, December 16, 6-8.30pm. Visit restore.org.uk for more information. Restore was recently awarded the title ‘Charity of the Year’ at OCVA’s Oxfordshire Charity and Volunteer Awards.
