THE Environment Agency has launched an investigation after being tipped off about waste buried illegally at Hinksey Heights Golf Course.
Officers uncovered bags of old fertiliser, containers of chemicals and hydrocarbon fluids partially buried in a large hole in the grounds of the South Hinksey course on Friday, November 11, a spokesman said yesterday.
A man is now being questioned over the chemicals, which are believed to have been dumped at some point during the weekend of November 5 and 6.
A member of the public rang the agency’s pollution incident hotline to report the crime.
Environment Agency officer Manna Wan said: “We had excellent information provided by the public that allowed us to act quickly and effectively to stop this illegal disposal of waste.
“The public are our eyes and ears and we would like to thank the public for reporting this illegal activity to us.”
No wildlife has been harmed by the chemicals.
No one at Hinksey Heights Golf Course was available for comment yesterday.
