Regarding the recent debate on duration of conscriptions, being two years or 18 months, I was conscripted on June 5, 1947, served two years in the Royal Berks, came home on July 5, 1949, to be placed on the Z Reserve list.

I was recalled to Suez and Korean crisis but exempt because I drove RAF 3 Milton lorries.

I was finally discharged from the army on June 30, 1959, but had to serve 18 months in the TA for being exempt from Suez and Korea.

Was this 2 Reserve only placed there or infantry men, or did the national service men go on it and how long for?

As national service started in January 1950 were they exempt?

As a conscript in 1947 my total service to my country was 12 years, two with the colours and 10 with reserve regulars.

Soldiers only signed for 12 years, five with the colours, seven with the reserve. Can anyone explain the duration of 2 Reserve for conscripts?
