Let me clear up the many misconceptions on the EU expressed in G Limmer's letter (Oxford Mail, November 14).

Under EU Procurement Law any large EU government contracts are awarded to EU members and not necessarily on the lowest cost basis.

If the UK went daft and left the EU that would preclude the UK’s involvement.

Yes I realise that the UK existed before the EU, but the EU isn’t going to go away.

We can’t pretend otherwise and we have to accept reality.

Yes, Mr Limmer is correct on world energy prices mostly being set in US dollars, but the increasing amount of energy imported to the UK from the Euro-zone is paid for in euros, But in any case, the pound has fallen against the US dollar by 23 per cent in the last four years, while in contrast the euro has risen by five per cent.

So either way, membership of the euro would result in lower energy bills.

Therefore, as I stated previously, if the UK Government had paid no heed to “Little Englanders” and had the sense to join to the euro four years ago, those energy imports would be 30 per cent lower in price.

Finally, in terms of “packing my bags to live in the EU”?

I already do – eventually Mr Limmer will realise he does as well.
