MUSLIMS have shown Christmas is not just for Christians by helping to organise Rose Hill’s first community festive tree.
Rose Hill children’s centre worker Nassira Jmil came up with idea for the tree at The Oval to bring the community together.
She said: “I thought it would really benefit the community to have a Christmas tree here.
“I know a lot of people wanted to go and see the Christmas lights in London last year and it just came to my mind ‘why don’t we have a Christmas tree?’”
Colleague Hafsa Akkas said: “Although Muslims do not celebrate Christmas in the traditional Christian way, we do recognise and enjoy the festivities and see it as a time for people of all cultures to come together with family and friends, to celebrate, socialise and have fun.”
The tree is being financed from Lottery funding and grants from the city and county councils, and a contractor working on the estate, as part of a food festival with carols on Saturday, December 10.
