DON’T be fooled by the glum faces – these children had every reason to be proud of themselves.

They had taken part in an art competition and against tough opposition from other city schools, they made a clean sweep of the prizes.

They were all pupils at Windmill First School in Margaret Road, Headington, Oxford.

They are, left to right, Ann Slaymaker, Natasha Trigg, Jenny Kent, Elizabeth Aitchison, Lucy Hackney, Dominique Hiscock and Eunice Jolobe.

The competition was run by the Oxford and Swindon Co-operative Society to find the school most in touch with art and nature.

And although they may not look too enthusiastic in the picture above, the Windmill team scooped first, second and third prizes.

Their competitors were left trailing and never got a look in!

The theme of the competition was people working with nature and the winning entry – by Lucy, Elizabeth, Jenny, Natasha and Ann, all nine years old – showed workers in the fields with horses.

Second prize went to Dominque, eight, who had left to join Headington Girls’ School but returned to have her picture taken with her former classmates.

She submitted two entries showing bees and a shepherd with a sheepdog.

Third prize went to Eunice, 10, who chose bees at work as her theme.

Between them, the girls won £30 – half went to them and the other half to the school.

Headmaster Bill Camping congratulated the team on their success.

He added that the money would probably be spent on art materials, in the hope of nurturing more competition winners at the school in the future.
