THE mother of a teenage moped rider killed by a speeding drink-driver said she hopes the culprit “will be haunted forever” by the crash.

Company director Glen Holburt was jailed at Oxford Crown Court on Wednesday after earlier admitting causing death by careless driving while over the limit.

Eddie Lynch, 16, was killed when Holburt’s Audi A6 hit his stationary moped on the B4031 Clifton Road, Deddington, on April 15.

The Kidlington teenager, who had his brake light, rear light and indicator on, was waiting to drive in to a field to attend a birthday party.

His helmet was unbuckled and came off in the incident. He was not insured, nor had he passed his compulsory basic training (CBT), though Judge Patrick Eccles said the last two factors did not mitigate the defendant’s responsibility.

Holburt, of Duns Tew Road, Hempton, had 63 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes. He hit Eddie at a minimum of 48mph in a 40mph zone.

Holburt — a director of the Talarius, the company which runs 180 gaming centres and 10,000 machines in the UK — was jailed for four years and banned from driving for six years.

Eddie’s mother said: “No sentence given here would reflect the utter devastation Mr Holburt has caused to our lives. Life without Eddie is very, very difficult.

“Mr Holburt is a dangerous man and he represents all those who think they can totally disregard the law. He drank to excess, drove a high-powered vehicle at speed and killed our child.

“He then used his privileged position and exemplary past to try to wriggle out of it.

“There is not one person here today who will feel sorry for him. With his lack of remorse he has forfeited the right to any forgiveness he may have had. We hope he will be haunted forever by the events of that night.”
