NEARLY 100 years of anecdotes and memories of the Hanneys have been recorded in a new book.

Author Angela Cousins, left, spent a year gathering stories from more than 80 old and new residents of East and West Hanney.

Telling Tales A Patchwork of Village People – East and West Hanney 2011 includes accounts from a 98-year-old born in East Hanney and a resident who moved there last year.

Former primary school teacher Mrs Cousins, 74, of Main Street in West Hanney, wrote the book to link the old and new villagers.

East Hanney resident Olive Tuck, 98, was interviewed by her just months before she died.

Mrs Cousins said: “The old folk like Olive are not going to be with us in five or 10 years and their stories go with them.”

Matthew Barber, Vale of White Horse District Council member for the Hanneys, attended the book launch on Saturday.

He said: “Often these sorts of books just look at the history of the village whereas this book is a history of the people that live in the village.”

The book costs £11 and is available from Hanney Community Shop, John’s Bookseller in Grove and the Vale and Downland Museum in Wantage. Picture: OX49023
