Sir – The Corn Exchange, Witney, was unexpectedly and hurriedly closed down on November 9. On that same day the council published a press release according to which they have “listened to hall users and are incorporating these views in their plans”. Did communication between the hall users (I am one and I do not remember being listened to) and the town council take place faster than the speed of light?
The town council wants to demolish the Corn Exchange and build a “modern purpose-built town centre venue” in its place. Is there no limit to crazy plans? Should we demolish Westminster Abbey because it is too old and build a new modern church in its place?
The Corn Exchange is a nice old building situated on the Market Square, providing a central focus in Witney. Until November 9 it served the community well. Upgrading it would cost much less than building a monstrosity in its place.
Judit Brody, Witney
