STAFF from RAF Benson near Wallingford have completed their latest tough assignment — pulling a 33-tonne truck 100ft to raise about £600 for Oxford-based hospice Helen and Douglas House.

Ten teams from across the station competed in the second annual charity truck pull, organised by the station’s Mechanical Transport Flight.

The challenge was to pull a 33-tonne MAN Support Vehicle HX77 over a distance of 100ft in the quickest time possible.Teams included both Puma Force Squadrons, several logistics sections and a team of station executives led by Group Captain Richard Mason.

The Mechanical Transport Maintenance Section were the winners, reaching the finishing line in 41 seconds. the station executives team came seventh in a time of 47.60secs.

Gp Capt Mason, who presented the trophy to the winning team, said: “This was a fantastic event that raised much-needed funds for a very worthy local cause.”

Helen and Douglas House in Magdalen Road, East Oxford, cares for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families. It costs around £4.5m every year to run Helen and Douglas House, with the vast majority of money coming from fundraising donations.
