SCONES and jam were the order of the day as Wolvercote community cafe opened its doors to the public.
Identifying a gap in the market for a place to meet and chat, a group of volunteers has set up the shop one day a week in the new parish room at St Peter’s Church.
Barbara Dennis, 69, of Wolvercote – pictured left with Valerie Barnish – was one of the first to sample a cup of coffee and a slice of cake on Tuesday.
She told the Oxford Mail: “Everything was brought in by the organisers, there were lots of different types of cake and scones.
“It was all hotting up nicely as I left.”
Organiser Diana Edwards, 48, of Lower Wolvercote, said: “We started off feeling our way a bit. We open once a week on a Tuesday and we are hoping to run from 9am to 4.30pm.
“It went fantastically on Tuesday, it exceeded our expectations and had a really nice atmosphere.”
