A teacher from Oxford has been flooded out of his Thai home during the heavy monsoon rains.

But Hamish Chalmers, a former Cherwell School pupil, has kept his family and friends updated on the crisis with an internet blog.

Monsoon rains since July have flooded parts of the country and killed more than 350 people.

Mr Chalmers, 37, has lived in Thailand for 10 years and has an eight-month-old daughter Millie with his Thai wife Map, 32.

He said: “While the evacuation itself was a traumatic experience, more traumatic is the idea that we will continue to be homeless for weeks.”

Their unguarded home is under threat from looters, and escaped crocodiles are also a danger.

Mr Chalmers, who lives in the north west suburbs of Bangkok, works as a primary school teacher at an international school.

He wrote the blog at the request of online Southeast Asia travel guide company travelfish.org which is aiming to keep readers up-to-date on the flooding. His family have stayed at four different places since leaving their home on October 19.

His mother Jan Chalmers, 68, of Leckford Road, North Oxford, said: “The internet has helped an awful lot.

“That is what has really kept us in touch with him. I would be so distraught if I did not have regular updates on it.”
