A POPULAR Oxford antiques shop will feature on a celebrity TV charity challenge.

Caroline Quentin, star of shows including Jonathan Creek and Men Behaving Badly, visited Antiques On High, on High Street, as part of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, to be screened on BBC Two on Monday November 7 at 7pm.

The show pits celebrities against each other in a quest to make money buying and selling antiques. The proceeds will go towards this year’s Children in Need appeal.

Ms Quentin and Sir Terry Wogan – her TV opponent in the challenge – also visited a Wallingford antiques market while filming for the show.

They bought items from stalls at the Lamb Arcade market, including a 19th century hand-painted vase and a music stand.

Ms Quentin picked up a number of items in the Oxford shop, including a giant magnifying glass which echoed back to her investigative days in Jonathan Creek.

She also bought several pieces of costume jewellery pieces from vintage costume dealer Caroline Henney, who is one of the 26 traders based in the shop.

Mrs Henney said: “They were fabulous.

“In the antiques trade, everyone’s a bit sceptical about television shows because there are a lot of them and they always barter the dealers down to the very last penny.

“It makes it look like dealers mark prices up.

“When it’s charity based, you just sort of go with the flow.”

The pair spent about two hours in the shop being filmed for the show, Mrs Henney said: “The team that filmed it came down from Scotland so they paid us with Scottish money, which was quite funny – you don’t see it that often down south.

“Caroline Quentin was delightful, really friendly and all the customers and dealers enjoyed it.

“While she did buy a piece from me I don’t think it will do well because costume jewellery tends to bomb at auction.”

She said she hoped the magnifying glass – bought for £25 bartered down from £65 – helped Ms Quentin take the prize.

The teams had a budget of £400 for the challenge, and travelled the country in classic vintage cars to scour antique shops for hidden treasures before taking them to auction.

Other celebrities taking part include former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe, Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood, radio DJ Tony Blackburn, singer Toyah Wilcox, Bond girls Honor Blackman and Britt Ekland and Dragon’s Den’s Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis.

The show was filmed over the summer.
