A MAN who was involved in a glassing attack on a drinker in an Oxford pub has been handed a suspended jail term.

Liam Bayat was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court yesterday, having earlier admitted affray.

Lee Washington had a pint glass thrown at his face at the White Horse pub in London Road, Headington.

The court heard the attack happened after England’s 1-1 draw with the USA in last year’s football World Cup.

Bayat, of Leiden Road, in Wood Farm, admitted throwing punches, but denied any use of the glass and said he had been hit first.

Prosecutor Nikki Duncan said the victim had asked a man to move from his path as he carried a tray of drinks to the table where he was sitting with his wife before the violence broke out.

Miss Duncan said: “He was punched, then that man threw a pint glass into his face.

“It was then said by the other witnesses that a group of three or four joined in the attack throwing punches and several more glasses.”

No-one else has been prosecuted.

Peter Du Feu, defending, said of Bayat, who was jailed for burglary in 2007: “There was a fight in a public place and he joined in with a couple of punches.

“He does not accept any responsibility for provoking the incident or the much more serious incident of throwing glass about.”

Bayat was given a six-month jail term, suspended for a year.

He was also ordered to adhere to a three-month weekend curfew between Thursdays and Sundays and pay £1,000 compensation.
