SILVERSTONE will be shuddering to the roar of 30 500 horsepower supercars with the final round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship taking to the circuit on Sunday, September 24.

All three categories of the prestigious GT racing championship are still to be decided, with cars from Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin and Lotus still able to take titles in the GT2, GT3 and GTC categories.

In GT2, Northampton's Tim Mullen will be looking to wrap up the title that he has been contesting fiercely along with team-mate Chris Niarchos in their Ferrari F430 GT. The pair sit two points clear of 2006 Le Mans 24-hour race class winners, Team LNT, in their thunderous Panoz Esperante GTLM.

Mullen comes to his home circuit off the back of a double victory at Brands Hatch on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Looking forward to the Silverstone race, Mullen said: "It would fantastic to not only win the British title but to do it at Silverstone as well. We have had a hard battle on our hands this year, LNT have run us close at every round and we cannot be complacent because they will exploit any mistakes.

"Silverstone will suit the Ferrari but we may have to watch ourselves on the longer straights because the Panoz is a real sledgehammer of an engine."

Lotus and Aston Martin will be contesting the GT3 category, with Sam Blogg and George Mackintosh driving the diminutive 750 KG Lotus Exige, and Leo Machitski and Jonathan Cocker driving the 520 horsepower Aston Martin DBRS9. The circuit may favour the Aston Martins hugely powerful engine rather than the Exige's nimble handling and astonishing braking ability.

The GTC category is the biggest on the grid and the prime mover in this competitive class has been Trackspeed Porsche. Matt Allison and Jonny Lang are in top spot, with team-mate Ryan Hooker just five points behind. The last GTC category race was won by just two tenths of a second, demonstrating why this division of the GT series is so exciting to watch.
