MOURNERS at Carterton may have been holding their first ceremony, but for many of the 300 people outside Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital it was yet another sad occasion.

Yesterday’s attendance was slightly up on the usual turn out outside St Anthony of Padua Church but the feelings were the same as ever.

Members of the Royal British Legion have turned out to repatriations at Headley Way since June 2008 and remain dedicated to the city showing its tribute alongside Carterton now.

Jim Lewendon, of the Royal British Legion, said: “I hope it might continue. But we didn’t do anything particular for today.

“I think what they have done over there at Carterton is great. That memorial garden is ideal and a lot of thought has gone into public safety.”

Ann Booker, 61, of Blackbird Leys, said: “I come here as often as I can. It is very moving and has been very well organised.”

Eve Ross, 48, of Headington, came with her son Jonny Hitchens, 12.

She said: “It’s important that we should all know that these upsetting things happen.”

Louise Higgins, 37, who lives in Headley Way, said: “It is done well here.”

Elise Benjamin, Lord Mayor of Oxford, said: “It is sad. It is very personal to me because I have a close childhood friend who is out in Afghanistan.

“The veterans work so hard to keep this going.

“The only sad thing for me is seeing all the people driving by who don’t know what is happening.”
