A ROUND of applause has greeted the cortege on the first repatriation back at RAF Brize Norton.

The family of Sgt Barry Weston laid single roses on the roof of the hearse as it passed the new memorial garden in Norton Way, Carterton.

About 2,000 people have gathered at the garden and for more than a mile along the route in Carterton.

The cortege is due to head to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

A crowd of about 100 has gathered at The Evenlode pub off the A40 near Eynsham, including some retained firefighters from the village.

About 100 people, many from the Royal British Legion, have also gathered in Headley Way, Oxford, where they have stood to mark repatriations since June 2008.
