READING the long letter (Oxford Mail, September 2, Letters) from Councillor Rodney Rose about salt bins, I noticed he did not mention one word about the £100-plus VAT per ton charge for bags of road salt.

We all agree the salt bins need refilling during bad weather, that is what we pay council tax for!

What residents object to is paying twice for it. All he did in his letter was make excuses and attempt to put the onus on parish and town councils to do what they are expected to do.

The highways, footpaths and public safety are the county council’s responsibility and no amount of excuses or the Big Society can pass that responsibility on to other authorities and that being the case, get on with your job and stop making excuses.
