A PATIENT who struggles to walk and stand for a long time has completed a 24-hour cycle ride in aid of the hospital which helped him.
Peter Hiscock, 37, from Faringdon, has raised hundreds of pounds for the physiotherapy department at the Oxford Centre for Enablement (OCE) as a thank-you for helping him improve his strength and endurance.
Mr Hiscock, an engineer at Rutherford Laboratories, was diagnosed with Spastic paraparesis from an early age and was seen as an outpatient at OCE from the start of the year when his condition seemed to worsen.
Spastic paraparesis is a rare disorder where parts of the body develop spasticity and weakness.
The OCE is on the grounds of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and provides specialist neurological rehabilitation services.
The former patient completed a 24-hour cycle ride from Snowdonia to the OCE on Tuesday.
He said: “My condition means I often feel a tightness and weakness in both of my legs and at the end of last year it was becoming increasingly hard to walk and stand for long periods of time.
“Following physiotherapy at OCE I have gained increased endurance and I also have special ankle and knee supports which mean I am now able to stand and walk for a lot longer than I ever thought.”
