A TEENAGER stole thousands of pounds’ worth of jewellery from his mother to fund an alcohol addiction.

Joshua Dodd stole a £2,000 bracelet from his mum Theresa’s home in Abingdon before pawning it for just £600.

He also took other jewellery belonging to his mum to a jeweller and received £73 for it.

The 19-year-old, of no fixed address, was given a suspended jail sentence at Oxford Crown Court yesterday after earlier admitting two counts of fraud and one of theft.

Rachel Drake, prosecuting, said the offences occurred in March and April this year.

She said Mrs Dodd told police after the theft: “I’m totally devastated, I cannot believe he has done this. Joshua is no longer welcome at my home and I support the police in this matter, although I am devastated.”

Mrs Dodd retracted her support for the prosecution in July but her son said he deserved his punishment and subsequently entered guilty pleas, Miss Drake said.

Hassan Baig, defending, said his client no longer drinks and had become a loving son to his mother.

Dodd was handed an eight-month jail term, suspended for two years, with a year’s supervision.
