IT WAS nice to see Keith Mason’s photo of the incomparable North American Mustang in (August 30). This was arguably the finest interceptor fighter of World War II with its high speed, manoeuvrability and long range – something Berliners were to discover. Although it first flew in 1940, this aircraft, combined with the Merlin engine, did not enter RAF service until the start of 1944, which made it far too late to influence the Battle of Britain. There were close to 15,000 of these aircraft built but little seems to be heard of them today.
