FOREIGN language students bring huge benefits to our city.
Although no one seems able to put a financial estimate on how much they bring to the economy, it is likely to be in the hundreds of thousands a year.
They also add to the international flavour of our city and – hopefully – act as ambassadors for Oxford when they get back home.
However, as with any influx of tourism, they bring some problems with them.
This year issues such as litter, late-night drinking and overcrowded buses seem to have been worse than ever.
These are the issues that greatly affect local people going about their daily lives.
So it is only sensible that police, councillors and language school bosses meet to sort out a code of conduct.
Many of the problems could be sorted by simple measures such as distributing bus passes, a more structured timetable of activities and a stern talk about littering.
We hope a compromise can be reached so language students continue to be a boost to Oxford’s economy, tourist attractions and international image.
