AN OXFORD man will be putting his body to the test for charity by swimming the Channel in September.

Nigel Doggett, above, will be part of a nine-man team raising money for Self Unlimited, a charity which supports people with learning disabilities.

Mr Doggett, 45, of Headington said: “We have been training for six and a half months.

“The regime has been extremely tough, with at least three visits to the pool each week in addition to running and cycling.

“But nothing can prepare you for the Everest of swimming”.

The group met through Mr Doggett’s work as a regional manager for glass repair company Belron and decided to undertake this task to raise money for Self Unlimited, where Mr Doggett is a trustee.

The swimmers will tackle the 22-mile swim, across world’s busiest shipping lane, in relays taking between 14 and 20 hours.

Self Unlimited provides housing, occupation and employment opportunities to those with learning disabilities.

The team has raised more than £20,000 but is hoping to make much more.
