OXFORD’S Muslim community has launched a bid to raise £10,000 for victims of the famine in east Africa.

Dr Hojjat Ramzy, of the Oxford Islamic Information Centre, has been joined by local Muslims going door to door to collect money to be distributed by Muslim Aid, Islamic Relief and Human Appeal International.

He will be collecting in Cornmarket Street today.

So far he has raised £2,000 for the cause, as well as collecting bags of unwanted clothes which have been sold in aid of the appeal.

He said: “By the grace of God we will raise £10,000.

“The Muslim community so far has not done that much for this appeal so we are trying to raise this money in particular for the children affected. It’s going to be an ongoing problem and they will need ongoing support.

“We are praying for them and praying that rain comes and it gets better.”

Dr Ramzy and other supporters will be shaking tins between 10.30am and 6pm today. Cheques payable to Oxford Information Centre (Africa Appeal) can also be sent to 8 St Omer Road, Cowley.
