FIREFIGHTERS were called to a chimney fire in a farmhouse near Stanton Harcourt last night.

The crew from Eynsham found a fire involving the flue and surround of a wood-burning stove on the ground floor at around 9pm.

The crews identified the cause of the fire using a thermal-imaging camera and checked the blaze had not spread to other parts of the house.

They said the fire was caused by heat from the flue igniting accumulated debris on top of the register plate as well as the wooden chimney breast.

The occupier had extinguished the fire before fire crews arrived.

Watch Manager Frank Patterson said: “Due to the quick thinking of the occupier a more serious house fire was prevented. The damage was minimal and easily repairable.

“Chimneys should be swept at least once per year, and accumulated debris should be removed regularly.

“Ensure that you have working smoke detectors fitted in case a fire does happen.”
