ADULTS with learning difficulties teamed up with a local artist to paint four murals on the walls of a fire station.

It was part of a special project set up by Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service and Adult Learning.

The murals, at the Franklin Vermeulen Safety Centre at Rewley Road Fire Station, depict scenes of Oxford and include safety messages.

Fourteen adult learners came from across the county to take part in the four-day workshop which finished yesterday.

One of the adult learners, Mark, said: “It’s been really brilliant. I’ve always enjoyed painting. We have come together really well and I’ve got lots out of it.”

The artist helping them out is Dionne Barber, pictured left, with Gaynor, Michael, and Sarah at the back and Geoffrey with Malcolm Tandy from Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service.

She said: “The most important thing for me is that the participants come away with new and interesting experiences.

“I really enjoy working with this group of people, there’s a variety of skills and abilities and lots of personalities. It also challenges me as an artist because I have to think in different ways.”

The Franklin Vermeulen Safety Centre teaches children and vulnerable groups how to be safe by getting them to act out different scenarios.
