An 83-year-old woman was threatened in her home in Didcot by a burglar holding a hook who then stole a substantial amount of cash.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the pensioner was woken in the early hours of Saturday morning at her home in Dunsden Close, off Foxhall Road.

The victim was in bed when she was woken by the man coming into her bedroom at about 5.30am and he threatened her with a metal hook.

He demanded cash and the victim handed over a substantial amount, which she had been saving up for a trip.

The burglar is then thought to have left through patio doors at the back of the house.

Det Insp Steve Duffy, who is investigating the incident, said: “The victim has been left very shaken by what was a traumatic experience for her.

“Fortunately, she did not suffer any significant injuries in the incident.

“I know that people feel very strongly about this type of crime, particularly when they involve elderly or vulnerable people, and I am appealing for anyone in the community with any information about this incident who could help with our investigation to contact me as a matter of urgency.

“Due to the time of the morning, we would be looking for help from people who were about to go to work, and of course there are people coming home from clubs and nights out, making their way home.”

Det Insp Duffy said such incidents were “very rare” in the Didcot area, and added: “We are doing everything possible to bring the offender to justice.”
