OXFORD already has a fine tradition of saluting fallen soldiers when their bodies are repatriated to Britain, with people gathering to pay tribute in Headley Way, outside the John Radcliffe Hospital.
We are sure the new memorial garden close to the gates of RAF Brize Norton will provide a fitting setting for the people of West Oxfordshire to pay their respects to the fallen when it opens next month.
And while they will develop their own traditions for the solemn days when corteges pass by, the Union Flag from Wootton Bassett will provide a constant reminder of the special role the Wiltshire town has played.
