THE main road through Witney was closed yesterday after a cafe’s deep fat fryer caught fire.
The blaze started at Cafe Bakehouse, in High Street, just after 8am and caused smoke logging to three neighbouring shops.
Two people had to be evacuated by the fire service, but no one was injured and the fire was limited to the cafe’s kitchen area.
Crews used breathing apparatus and foam extinguishers, specifically designed for fat fires, to tackle the fire.
Firefighters used fans to clear smoke from the cafe and neighbouring properties.
Watch manager Steve Cook, of Witney Fire Station, said: “The occupier was very prompt and accurate with his description, this allowed me to take the necessary actions to get the fire extinguished far more quickly.
“The staff had evacuated the premises prior to our arrival and it was encouraging to see their procedures in the event of a fire had been followed.”
