Sir – We are all very quick to criticise and throw stones at the NHS. I would like to put the other side of the story, and sing the praises of our health service.

Last week, my mother-in-law was unfortunate enough to need to use three separate departments, one primary care and the other two at the John Radcliffe Hospital. After a fall she was seen and helped efficiently and kindly in A&E, but still needed the reassurance of her GP the next day, who had easier access to her full medical history.

As a result of another examination and gentle discussion about existing symptoms, the GP referred mother-in-law to a specialist gerantology day clinic on level 4 at the John Radcliffe.

A great number of tests were carried out, with more booked, and yet again the obvious interest and professional attention were much in evidence.

As a result she felt reassured, and began recovering quickly, knowing she was in such safe and caring hands. All the family feel very lucky we are in a place where such exemplary health care is available.
