Sir – I travel some 24,000 miles each year using mainly the A34/M40/M42 and the M5 and I am amazed at the flagrant disregard for the maximum speed limits on these roads.

I would estimate approximately 70 per cent of motorists exceed these limits by some 15 to 30 per cent. A classic example is the 50mph zone on the A34 at Botley, where I doubt if many more than 10 per cent abide by the limit imposed.

Some talk in the past has been made of raising the motorway limit to 80mph. This would probably induce motorists to go even faster.

Speed cameras seem to be of little use other than to reduce the cars’ speed just before and whilst in the cameras’ range.

And can someone (maybe with some authority) explain why so many people use the middle or outside lanes when there are often long stretches of empty road in the inside lane. If I attempt to use this lane under these circumstances I am breaking the law!
