A BERINSFIELD couple who say they have found their very own ‘one in a million’ have celebrated their diamond wedding.

Pamela and Donald Cherry met while they were still teenagers, but have spent 60 years sharing a love of cycling, supporting Oxford Cheetah speedway team and more recently caring for their beloved birds.

The pair met while Mr Cherry was working at the Well Shod shoe shop in Between Towns Road, in Cowley, that used to belong to the uncle of Mrs Cherry.

Mrs Cherry, nee Lee, said her husband plucked up the courage to ask her out for a date when he saw her visiting the family in the flat above the shop, but not before he had checked with her aunt.

Mr Cherry, who celebrated his 80th birthday yesterday said: “I used to see this lady going in and out of the upstairs and I thought she looked very nice.

“When I found out who she was I asked her aunty to see if she would like to go out on a date.

“Then when I spoke to her she was lovely.

Mrs Cherry, 78, said since she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma 15 years ago, her husband has looked after her “150 per cent”.

She said: “I have found one in a million in my husband.

“He has become my carer and he looks after me well.

“We work because we get on well and share the same interests.

“If you have an argument, one of us doesn’t go one way, and the other go off the other. We let it slide.”

The pair married on July 28, 1951, after a two-year engagement, at St James Church, in Beauchamp Lane, Cowley.

Mr Cherry added: “I love Pam because she is kind, generous, and lovable.

“She is not a very well lady at the moment, but she does as much as she possibly can.

“I think we get on well because we like the same things and we never argue about money.

“We have a little disagreement now and then but it always blows over.”

The couple, who have one son, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, celebrated their anniversary with a holiday in Scotland.
