ONE man from Abingdon and his brother are putting their best feet forward for schoolchildren in Tanzania.

John White, 51, and his brother Richard, 46, start climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on Monday.

The special educational needs officer said: “We are flying out this weekend and coming back two weeks later, when we’ll hopefully have climbed it.

“I think it’s going to be one long slog. And you never know how the altitude sickness hits you, it’s pot luck. But I’ve got my fingers crossed.”

The duo are hoping to raise £5,000 for the Momdo Foundation, a charity based in Tanzania.

Mr White said: “It supports people who are affected by HIV. And it helps with development work in schools, which is what we’re raising for.”

Mr White’s adventures in Tanzania began when he went on safari with wife Dee four years ago. The couple returned the following year and volunteered as teachers for six months.

He said: “She couldn’t be tempted to do the climb. So Richard was talked into it. I cycle to Oxford from Abingdon every day for work and have been going to the gym every evening, so it should be good.”
