AGAVE, the desert plant used to make the Mexican drink tequila, could cut vehicle emissions by being used as a biofuel, say Oxford University researchers. It grows well in dry or marginal land, so would not displace crops, unlike corn used to produce ethanol, the most widely-used substitute for petrol.
It produces high levels of sugar, ideal for making alcohol for use as a fuel.
