IT MAYBE hot out there, but watch out when you cool down.

That’s the message from the Environment Agency as it warns people to take care around water this summer.

The agency warned of hazards such as unexpectedly cold water and strong currents, which can catch bathers off guard. Structures such as bridges and locks can also be dangerous.

Russell Robson, strategic specialist for the Environment Agency, said: “The River Thames is a fantastic place to visit, particularly during the long summer holiday.

“But we want people to enjoy it without putting themselves and others at risk. Children must be accompanied by and adult and swimming confined to recognised swimming areas, pools and lidos.

“We see young people jumping off bridges and structures along much of the river and while this can be great fun, there are hidden dangers under the water and boats on the River Thames.”

The agency suggests not jumping or diving into water, not going in the river after drinking alcohol, not going in near weirs, locks, pipes and sluices, and being careful of water temperature, as those going in can get cramp or breathing difficulties.
