A SUMMER of fun has been guaranteed thanks to a scheme being funded by Oxford City Council.

The council has teamed up with more than ten different activity providers to make sure Oxford’s children don’t get bored this summer.

Available for children aged between five and 19, they take place across the city and are either free or have a minimal charge.

The launch comes as research revealed parents spend more than £600 entertaining kids during holidays.

One of the providers, ABC Fun Weeks, will run football sessions, circus skills and a trip to Bournemouth.

Jason Carbon, who runs the activities, said: “It is their summer holidays and children should have lovely memories of them. No child should leave primary school without a day on the beach eating chips.

“We thought we could replicate what we did as children and here they can do all those things in a safe and fun environment.”

A meal deal is also offered for £1.50 to encourage children to stay over lunch and eat healthily.

The first day of Mr Carbon’s fun camp on Monday was attended by 54 children.

Other providers include Pegasus Theatre, Oxford Active and Dovecote Parent’s Committee.

The popular £160,000 council scheme, attended by 1,373 children in Barton, Blackbird Leys, Rose Hill and Cowley last year, was protected from cuts as councillors believed it was vital, particularly in deprived areas.

Research from insurance company LV shows parents spend an average of £660 per child over the school break.

Around £414 of this will go on entertainment, with the rest going on childcare.

Nationally, more than a third of parents said the costs connected to school holidays were “unaffordable”.
