Sir – Earlier this month I had the pleasure of driving north from Romsey along the A36.

It leads over a rise into Wiltshire and opens a view of lovely English countryside enhanced that day by the sun shining on Salisbury Cathedral.

My way home was the A34, over the Downs, opening another lovely view . . . but oh dear. Instead of a cathedral, the sun shone on Didcot Power Station.

Just who, why and how daft were the people who allowed such incongruity, visible to all? But soon it will be closing and the chimney, cooling towers and turbine hall will blight Oxfordshire no more.

But there are some people who do not worry about eyesores. A planning application has been lodged to build a huge rubbish disposal plant right next to the power station. The building and chimney are truly huge, even bigger than Didcot’s. It will have a 40-year life. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
