Sir – There is an urgent need for significant improvements in provision in what is supposed to be a major cycling city, not to mention the generally woeful provision in the wider county but I doubt this is going to happen soon.

In the interim, a simple ad campaign across Oxfordshire could remind car drivers in particular that cyclists are road users with equal priority and that they should be treated with the same respect that drivers would accord each other.

It’s a simple message but it is ignored by a significant minority of drivers who believe the old myth that they own the road. You don’t: we share it.

I am a cyclist and a driver so I see the issue from both sides. I would suggest to fellow drivers that there is a difference of scale in the problems faced: as a driver, I don’t want to be late to appointments; as a cyclist I don’t want to be knocked off my bike and seriously injured or killed.

With this in mind, perhaps a little more patience would be welcome from all of us.

I’m not hopeful that there will be significant improvements in cycling provision any time soon — budget restraints will be claimed while more expensive roads are built across the county — but raising awareness of the rights of cyclists would help. Finally, to the taxi on the Eynsham to Botley road this morning whom I delayed by a minute and who roundly abused me for it (I returned the compliment . . .) can I recommend yoga or some other relaxation technique.
