JANET Hambridge clung onto life to see her son marry.

Now, a year after she died from lung cancer, her family is to host an event to raise cash for Cancer Research UK and the hospice which cared for her.

The fun day on Sunday, August 14, in Blackbird Leys, has been arranged by family members to celebrate her life and to raise cash for good cases.

The 60-year-old Ashmole Place resident died at home on August 8 last year.

The grandmother-of-five had been suffering with the disease for months, but clung on to see her son Trevor Francis, 31, get married.

The family even brought the wedding reception home so she could attend. But she was taken into hospital later that day and died the following week.

Daughter Nicola Rowland, from Ashmole Place, said: “It has been really tough, but it is getting easier.

“The first couple of months were the hardest, but we are getting there. We have all been through a bit of a rough patch, but we are really close as a family.”

The fun day, at the Priory Pub in Grenoble Road, will include a barbecue, talent show, tug of war, Aunt Sally contest and childrens’ crossbar challenge from 1pm.

Proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK and the Sir Michael Sobell House at the Churchill Hospital, Headington, which cared for Mrs Hambridge.

Ms Rowland said: “It does not matter how much we raise, we just want to help.

“We want to have a big day that everyone can enjoy. All the family will be there and lots of neighbours are all helping out.

“And we would love for any businesses to come forward and donate raffle prizes too.” She added: “Mum would have loved it. She would have loved to sit in her wheelchair and watch everyone having fun.

“She liked to have a good time and although she could not get too involved in the end, she loved to see everyone else enjoying themselves.”

Mrs Hambridge left children Mark Heeley, Chrissy Heeley, Ms Rowland and Mr Francis and five grandchildren, Daniel, Brandon, Caitlin, Aaliagh and George.

The brave grandmother last year told the Oxford Mail that seeing her son married had been a “dream come true”.
