ONE of the major routes in and out of the city has become a no-through road for the next five weeks.

Iffley Road is closed between The Plain and Temple Street until Thursday, September 1, as part of a 10-month Oxfordshire County Council programme to resurface the road, repair pavements, install new zebra crossings and improve junctions.

The first phase of the work, which began in May, has progressed ahead of schedule and the council hopes to reduce the amount of time needed for the project to reduce disruption.

Bus services which normally run via Iffley Road are being diverted to use Cowley Road.

Rodney Rose, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We are pleased with the progress of the first phase of the work and hope ultimately to be able to finish ahead of schedule.

“We’re striving keep the disruption to a minimum.”
