Sir – Your article on the High Speed 2 rail route through Oxfordshire was accompanied by a photograph with an erroneous caption — it was not an artist’s impression of the proposed HS2 route but an actual photograph of the High Speed 1 Channel Tunnel link through Kent.

As the photograph shows, High Speed 1 follows the M20 motorway for a lot of its route. The route planned for HS2 through Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire will not follow any significant transport corridor like this but instead will be built across open countryside, including 12 miles through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The public consultation on High Speed 2 ends on July 29. Anyone who objects to £33bn of taxpayers’ money being spent on a project which has not yet been backed up by a solid business case should please make their views known via the Department for Transport's website.
