Sir – Richard Bowen (Letters, July 14) would like to know why I feel safer cycling along the Botley Road on the roadway rather than on the cycle path.

In fact, I'm not sure whether I'm 'safer' or not, but I am certain that as well as being legal, it is much faster to cycle on the road.

On the Botley Road cycle lanes, cyclists are obliged to stop and give way at every side road and commercial entrance, of which there are several.

It is right that cycling groups campaign for cycle paths, as they are of great benefit to children, the elderly and less confident cyclists.

For confident cyclists however, on a long ride or when commuting, it is right that it is possible to choose a faster legal route. Motorists on the Botley Road are not required to give way every 100 metres or so, so when I cycle along the same road I don't expect to either.
