STREET parties were held in abundance for the Queen’s Coronation and Silver Jubilee.
But this one wasn’t celebrating any Royal occasion.
Families living in Mickle Way, Forest Hill, near Oxford, just wanted to mark their own milestone.
It was 25 years since the homes in the street were completed and residents moved in.
So what better way to celebrate than to hold the party of all parties?
Out came the trestle tables, streamers, banners, food and drink, and everyone started tucking in and talking about old times in their community.
About 200 people ate, drank and danced the night away as they marked their silver jubilee.
The photograph above, taken in August 1981, shows Mary McCarthy, of No 49, cutting the anniversary cake, which she baked for the occasion.
The organisers invited everyone in the street to join in the fun.
Invitations were also sent to people born and bred in the street, whose relatives still lived there.
After the street party, the residents’ celebrations continued with a disco and bar and partying went on until midnight.
Mrs McCarthy said: “We had a great deal of fun.”
